Personal Photo Challenge

Once a month I enjoy participating in Donna's "Personal Photo Challenge", and I always learn something new.  This month the challenge was 'still life', and I almost thought I'd skip it.  But I read the references that Donna provided, and learned about 'found still life' - photos taken usually outdoors, of things you find just waiting for your camera.

With that in mind, I was onboard, and headed out to our old stone fencerow to see what I could find. Immediately I found lots of leaves sitting on the boulders, in this case a a maple leaf on a mossy boulder.

And a few leaves were still decorated with drops from all the rain we've been getting the last few days.

All the ash leaves on the ground (the first to fall) made an interesting pattern too.

But there were a few other interesting items around waiting for attention.  This is a rather fancy birdhouse that a canoeing buddy made and gave to me.

And this is a little set of hanging bells that we picked up, in San Gimignano I think, when we travelled in Italy last year.  It's been hanging in the apple tree all summer.

Finally, some rounded river rocks that were put in when we had our patio built this summer, to enhance the drainage around the edge.  From starting out skeptical about 'still life' photography, I think I've ended up with some interesting shots.  Now I get to read and learn from the other participants.

  3. I find the hanging bells intriguing, do they actually tinkle in a breeze?

    1. No, I was hoping they would, like our various wind chimes, but they don't. They just look nice.

    2. That's too bad, coz I could hear them tinkle just by looking at them.

  10. I think that still life is an art form unto itself and one that I enjoy very much. It's no coincidence that so many artists throughout history painted bowls of fruits.

  12. I like all of these photos because they are in nature. The rusty bells is my favourite with the golden background of leaves and I like the single leaf laying on the moss. 'Still life' is all around us really. Great selection!

  16. I'm so glad that you read the background information, discovered that still life photography can be found outside, and chose to join in the challenge this month! You captured some lovely scenes just a few feed from your door. I am especially keen about the first photo because of the texture and beautiful color contrast. And I really like that last one too, with the mixture of leaves and rocks. Oh, and that birdhouse is absolutely charming. The soft light from the overcast weather really complimented all of your subjects very well!
