It was a beautiful sunny day and not too cold. Even on our way to church this morning we had decided to go for a drive this afternoon. Having heard that Snowy Owls had been reported to the west of us, it wasn't hard to decide where we were going.
Here's the one owl we saw, sitting on top of a telephone pole in a flat open landscape of farms. This is a concession or three just northwest of Chesley.
This owl sat still, just swivelling it's head around nearly 360°. Given the amount of dark barring on the wings, this is probably an immature owl or a female. Males are more completely white.
Surprisingly to me, these photos were taken both with an iphone7 and my big Nikon with a 200mm.
WOW! I am so envious of your meet-up. Never seen one of these although they have been reported rarely down this way.
ReplyDeleteGreat sighting. You've got really good country for snowys, flat and quite open. It's been years since I've seen one around here.
ReplyDeleteGlad you didn’t hibernate for too long, and a Snowy Owl is worth coming out of retirement for any day. There seems to be an abundance of them this winter.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find just cruising down the road.
ReplyDeleteGreat Snowy Owl photos. I think I have only ever seen two in my whole life and one was in a field near here last Spring.
ReplyDeleteNice job! I haven't seen any here.
ReplyDeleteWow, what beautiful pictures of Mr. Snowy Owl. Thank you for sharing, I would love to see one.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures! They are irruptive and perhaps this will be a good year for them. I hope so. :-)

ReplyDeleteVery cool to see these owls just sitting on top of utility poles! I'd love to have some to photograph where I live.
