Highway 26

Let me share a few more pictures of the road between here and Owen Sound, and help you relate to the landscape around here.

You start with a long slow rise up the hill from Georgian Bay.  This is the view you see when you return to Meaford.

There are a few farms along the way, but they don't appear very prosperous.

At the other end of the drive the highway drops down off the higher bedrock of the Niagara Escarpment toward the city of Owen Sound in the distance.

Below that rocky ridge there are some more prosperous looking farms like this one, a sheep farm.

In the middle of the trip is Owen Sound's airport, the Billy Bishop Regional Airport.  Billy Bishop was Canada's WWI flying ace, and was a native of Owen Sound.  His home and birthplace is now a museum.

This is a quiet rural airport for smaller mostly private planes, but Owen Sound is very proud of it, and of Billy.  There were a few complaints a decade or two ago when the Toronto Island airport rebranded itself as the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport - just another example of the big city trampling over rural Ontario!

  1. Large communities always seem to try to overwhelm their smaller neighbors and snatch whatever glory is due the smaller locale. There may be quite a difference in the soil fertility between the top of the escarpment and below or perhaps it's just the depth to bedrock that accounts for the relative prosperity of the farms.

  2. Great pictures as always. A nice blend of early Fall and Winter Scenes.
The bigger cities always try to take the glory away from the smaller communities.
When it comes to Health Care in the province you hear people from Windsor saying "The Province ends at London".
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  3. It looks like the main road has been cleared of snow, and beautiful landscapes. You come over the rise and see it all spread out, that makes the drive so worthwhile.

  5. Glad you are sharing your area of the country. The Georgian Bay in the distance is the type of view I rarely see. The second, the farm, looks like an painting. Thanks for today's photos.

  6. Have been up through Owen Sound a couple times then headed east but cannot remember traveling west along that stretch you have in your post. Have always liked that Georgian Bay area you are in but have never been up as far as Meaford. It's the forests, rocks, hills and general ruggedness of the landscape that always appealed to me.

  9. Very nice looking area of Canada. I've been close to the area, on Highway 26, but it was years ago. The weather looks to be quite hospitable for a drive. :-)

  10. Nice that you 'slowed' the drive down enough to share it. When you live in the area and travel the roads, you forget to slow down and remember things about the route. :)

  11. The topography reminds me of areas further south along the Escarpment that I grew up in.

The War Museum has an area about Billy, including the windshield of one of his planes- complete with broken glass from a bullet fired at him that missed him by an inch or two.
