Fall Has Rushed Past Us Quickly!

I hate to say it but fall is suddenly over.  November has arrived with its grey colours; there's no sign of colour on any trees in the countryside.  Only in town are the Norway Maples now changing to yellow.  It all happens so quickly when the change comes.  Here the entire change from the first hint of colour on our own trees until most of the leaves have fallen (and the temperature has dropped a lot) took just two weeks.  It's such a special season, but only lasts a short portion of the year.

The first hint of yellowy/orange on Oct. 17th.

Quite a bit brighter orange over 3 days.

And a few very red leaves a day later.

Soon our entire Sugar Maples were orange, as well as those remaining out on the golf course, with a lot of leaves on the ground.

The peak of fall colour here in our own yard was gorgeous, but only lasted little more than 3 days.

Four days later only a few leaves were left on the trees and the colour was definitely faded.

This roadside as we drove home yesterday shows you how little colour is left in the trees.  Some people find November depressing with all its grey colours, but I find it restful, a time of peace and quiet before the busy holiday season and then winter closes in.

  1. Such a pretty time of year, a pity it doesn't last longer. Just this week all the trees where I live burst into their finest autumn hues. But today we have wind and rain that will blow many of the leaves away.

  2. A carpet of golden leaves, then the bare branches have their own beauty , I remember when we were in the South Island in 1986, Central Otago, the ground was totally covered in those leaves, something I had not seen before in the North. Your trees have changed their leaf colours so quickly, is this something to do with the quick drop in your temperatures?

  3. It can last for a couple of months here, though it never reaches the intensity of colour which you experience. You got some great pictures while it lasted.

  4. I don't mind November when the sun is out but cloudy days can be so dreary. There are still a lot of leaves left on some of the trees here. I noticed a whole street of Ginkgos this morning that were wonderfully yellow but hadn't dropped a leaf yet.

  6. Leaves are gone here in exposed areas. We walked in the woods yesterday and there is still a lot of colour. I enjoy seeing the texture of the tree trunks this time of year. I don’t notice them as much when the leaves are out.

  7. Whatever else November is good for, it isn't outdoor photography.

  8. I think your November bleakness is ahead of our November bleakness. It looks like we both have a couple rainy days coming up but I do see a chance of sunshine Friday:))

  9. The colours sure do disappear quickly once they start but it was a beautiful fall show.

  10. I agree, fall tends to be very short once the leaves start to change. It seems we're dodging an early winter, as the day time temps are staying above freezing for a bit. The longer the snow holds off, the happier I am!

  11. You had some beautiful color! I dislike the gray /brown time of year before it gets white:)

  12. The colors of the past were wonderful. We still have some leaves but they have all turned brown.

  13. You certainly had some wonderful Autumn colour.
Our leaves are steadily falling, especially in the strong winds we've experienced lately.

    All the best Jan
