I'm continuing my posts covering the many 'flowers of the field' in bloom these days. I'll get back to more interesting topics soon.
The colours of Sweet Pea amaze me every year, they're so bright! And the Knapweed, even though it's a troublesome invasive weed in places, actually has a very pretty flower.
And this is the seedhead, the one that looks like a giant dandelion.
This bright yellow flower is St. John's Wort.
And this, just beginning to come out in pale yellow blooms, is Common Mullein, easily 6 feet tall..
By the way, if you're wondering how 'Birdsfoot Trefoil' got its name, this picture shows you. As you can see, the seed pods do resemble a bird's foot!
I would not have thought they were weeds with such stunning flowers. Beautiful colours all over.
ReplyDeleteWeeds are merely plants that are growing somewhere that someone doesn't want them -- but a number of them were brought from Europe as ornamental garden plants.
ReplyDeleteCommon Mulliein was one of the weeds I would see while bringing in the cows for milking when I was a kid. The pasture was down a hill and I had to follow the cow paths to go get them. We of course called them cow's tails. The first photo of sweet peas looked like orchid blooms when I first saw it.
ReplyDeleteI've never considered sweet pea to be a weed, who knew? It was definitely one of my mom's favorites in the garden and she often brought them in the house as cut flowers. Very pretty!
ReplyDeleteI have Sweet Peas (the perennial kind which is a weed I suppose) and also Mullein growing in my garden The Chickadees go crazy for the Mullein seeds once they're ripe. It's fun watching them hang on to the "spire".
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are actually really attractive. I didn't know that Sweet Peas would be considered a weed.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos of some of my favorites
ReplyDeleteWow, these are great photos of some of my favorites, too. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty and free for all to enjoy! Love these beauties!
ReplyDeleteLovely post! Interesting trefoil shot.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is a beautifully colored world we live in whether the colors are weeds or flowers. I have always liked Purple Loosestrife and yet it was so reviled years ago. I wished I could remember the names of everything like you do.
ReplyDeleteThese are eye catching.
ReplyDeletei was admiring and photographing the wildflowers around lake of the lilies. i saw the common mullein, i did not photograph it because i didn't know what it was and there was no flower. your pictures are really beautiful!!
