It's Hallowe'en!

There are lots more pictures of leaves changing colour, especially right here in our own back yard.  However, it's Hallowe'en!  Ghosts and goblins, trick or treaters; we're ready with our candy to avoid the tricks, even though we probably won't see many candy beggars at the door on our street.

In the meantime, I'm struck with how the culture of Hallowe'en is changing.  Not only are costumes getting more expensive, but displays outside homes are getting (in my mind), quite excessive!

Not only was there a huge and scary ghost outside this home, there was also a skeleton rising up from the ground.

Presumably arising from this coffin lying on the front lawn.

There was also a family of grinning pumpkins, behind a low skeletal fence.

Put it together and you've got all this, with the addition of the purple monster on the left.  I like the ghost family the best!

Not to be outdone, the immediate neighbours have created a quite scary entrance that trick or treaters will have to conquer in order to get their treats.

  1. Some people here have gone overboard too. The spiders on the last house are part of a nightmare!

  2. Isn't that something? I'm sure the children will love it. Though I do agree, it seems a bit much for one day.
My daughter put out a ghost, something like the first one, on October 1st! She's since added a goblin and pumpkins, while by son's g/f has put out a huge arch that looks like a monster for the kids to walk up and through. Here, we'll be watching the Blue Jays!

  3. There are people who have taken the decorations to extreme.!!! I like more simple ones, like pumpkins, mums and corn stalks. Guess I'm showing my age. :)

  6. Speaking of expensive costumes, you caused me to remember paper outfits. DO you remember? Perhaps you are just that much younger than I that you didn't experience them

  7. The Pumpkin family without the fence would be my pick, a lot of thought into so many costumes and displays, we had lots of younger ones walking up and down our street, the most I have seen for years.

  8. Great decorations but you can't beat home made items.

  11. I think the two key words in your post today were, 'quite excessive' and I do agree with you. 'Over the Top' could be added to those Halloween displays as well. Yes, and it might even have something to do with our age too, as one commenter noted.

  12. It’s a time for fun, more silliness than it used to be. I wonder if future historians will think we really believed our nonsense stories.

  13. And all we had was a carved pumpkin when I was a kid.
