I'll set aside the issue of climate change and whether fall is actually arriving earlier than it used to, but there are definitely a lot of signs in the air that Fall will soon be here. And since the title of this blog refers to changing seasons, I think it's useful to make note of these changes.
But that's just the most obvious sign of fall in my books.
The Blue Jays are screaming in the morning and the other day we saw some Canada Geese flying over in their typical 'V' formation. Some birds have already left for warmer climes, and of course some will be with us all winter. Birds like Chickadees and Juncos are moving south out of the boreal forest to join us during the winter months.
The mornings are noticeably cooler, with dew of the grass. The harvest is well underway, as here we're picking tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. On the farms the wheat harvest is already finished, and sweet corn is for sale at the farm gate. We are past Lammas Day, the ancient celebration of the coming harvest.
Just last night we were remarking on how the darkness was arriving earlier. My own care-giving schedule means I get up and go to bed in the light all summer, but I get up and go to bed in the dark all winter. It's quite the obivous change! Here's to a nice sunny warm fall!
I’ve just read that the Farmers Almanac says to expect the first frost 6 weeks after the goldenrod bloom….and that was about 10 days ago here.

ReplyDeleteIt's 29 here today and will no doubt hit 30 soon. Hopefully next week we'll see temperatures a little (?) lower.
ReplyDeleteCertainly agree with all of the above, as we are noticing all of it here as well. The Blue Jays have been more or less absent all summer, but are now being seen and are very noisy. It is pretty much dark at 9PM now, and the mornings are very dew-wet.

The golden rod here is just starting to bloom. We don't get HOT summers here so I'm not ready for the cold. yet!! :)

ReplyDeleteWe have goldenrod in bloom also and the red maples are beginning to turn color -- fall's on its way and will arrive on September 1.
ReplyDeleteFall/autumn is definitely happening here in the northwest of the USA. It's cooler, wetter, the wind has changed, the PLANTS have changed. It's weird. Used to be August was hotter than any other month, but not any more. My "burning bush" is turning red when it didn't used to do that until mid-September ... ok, no jokes here about my "burning bush". :-)

ReplyDeleteThe slant of light really signals the change to me, and that golden color that begins to seep into the green. Goldenrod is thinking about opening here. Enjoyed this post!
ReplyDeleteIt sure is changing, what seems quickly. Cooler nights, days taking longer to warm up, it is 9 pm and dark already! Seems like it happened in the blink of an eye.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn’t yet feel like autumn yet. But after 6 weeks or more apparently living in North Africa, we are suddenly back to nearly normal here in North London. It has been SO hot! And terribly dry. And now we are told it is likely to be worse next year. I’ve always liked Golden Rod, but yes, it’s usually a weed here too.
