Turning the Corner

There comes a day in winter every year when, even though it may be bitterly cold, the sun seems a little brighter, the shadows more distinct, and I just get the impression we've turned the corner toward spring.  Today is that day, or at least the first of those days this year, for there will be more.

It's -8°C here, and I don't see any snow melting, but I'm thinking there are plants buried in the soil that are starting to grow.  And I know the sap in the trees is starting to think of running up into the branches.  Soon it will be maple syrup time.  I expect some producers are already checking their lines and cleaning their equipment.  The atmosphere outside our window today makes me think of that!

Here's to spring!

  1. After an hour plus of shovelling snow this morning, and more falling now, I'm not certain I share your optimism. Maybe later this week when the temperatures get up near freezing. But as my son reminded me the other day, there are just over 3 weeks left in February. March will be much better.

    Lovely photo of your yard!

  2. Love those long shadows, the Heron must be feeling a lot happier.Down here, huge flooding in the South Island again, and at our place, rain non stop, yesterday, all night and so far all today. However, we are safe and dry.Even if having gone from 34C to 15 C right now at 10 a.m. Sunday. If this keeps up, time to put away the summer clothes!!!

  5. Your right, today was definitely one of those days with all that bright sunshine outside. Despite the cold it was a harbinger of warmer and better days ahead. We will just have to lean a little heavier for a little longer on our patience, and smilingly wait for those days to be soon upon us:))

  11. It is interesting how certain days begin to affect how we view the light and how our mood is changing, even if the weather is very cold! I will have to check the sap on our sugar maple.

  12. The sun is high enough in the sky now that snow is beginning to melt along the roadsides even though the temperature's well below freezing; and one of the male cardinals in the neighborhood was singing this morning -- spring's on its way.

  13. I enjoyed seeing the sun when I was driving home from another city for a shopping experience. A bit chilly outside without a coat on. I took coat off 2 times in car as it was warm in car with heat low. A bit of ice on daughter's car the other night when I looked outside before I went to bed. My sister sent me a photo of her in snow near Mt. Rainier in Washington. A day before her birthday. It looked very nice outside. Have a good day!
