Redbud and Serviceberry

The most unique small tree we have is a Redbud, and down the street is a house with a large Serviceberry.  Both of these are native trees, though the Redbud would not be here if it were not planted.  It's an understory tree we saw blooming throughout the Great Smokies, and the Serviceberry is seen along the edges of fields around here.  Both of them are currently in bloom.

Here's our Redbud in full bloom, and right outside my bedroom window.

It amazes me how the blooms erupt right along the stems and branches, and the pink colour is incredible!

The blooms are so crowded that getting a picture of individual blooms is tough!

A few doors down the street is this beautiful Serviceberry, not often used as an ornamental.

The small tree is just covered with frothy white flowers.

Both of these are well worth planting just for their beauty!

  1. I would call that Redbud a Judas Tree. We have a few around here, but lots of Serviceberrys. We call them Amelanchier. Probably because we already have a Wild Service Tree (related to Rowan/Mountain Ash), and a Service Tree, mysteriously a completely different tree. I wonder why so many different trees ended up with “service” in their names? Have you ever collected enough Serviceberry fruit to make a crumble/crisp?

  4. The serviceberry is blooming here too. I don’t think I’ve ever seen redbud. A beauty for sure!

  5. We're debating between Redbud and Lilacs. I love the Redbud but don't want a sprawling tree in the small space we have. Probably it will be a lilac bush instead. We have 2 Service berrys and they were lovely this spring. The blossoms are gone now.

  7. Redbud has always been my favorite flowering tree. Did you know the flowers are edible? You can make jelly with them too.

  8. They are both beautiful, and the redbud amazes me, as there appears to be no leaves just flowers. Pretty darn cool!

  9. Redbuds certainly are beautiful with their shocking pink blossoms. It's too bad that serviceberry isn't used as an ornamental more often, it's flowers are pretty and the fruit feeds birds as soon as it ripens. I'm sorry I haven't commentated recently, if you read my blog you'll understand why.
