Before we move to some local history I must post about the Fall Fair, which happened yesterday. Although we live in the town of Meaford, there's a large rural area, the former townships of St. Vincent and Sydenham that have been amalgamated to the town, so it's largely that large rural area that the fair draws on for volunteers and attendees.
Hanging on the wall right in front of the entrance are the quilts. Because of Mrs. F.G.'s involvement in quilting I know a little about the work that goes into them, and an embroidered quilt like this one takes a LONG time! I was impressed.
Another adult category was the preserves, jams, pickles and such. I immediately noticed the canned tomato sauce, since Mrs. F.G. has spent a good chunk of this week doing the same thing!
There was a whole category of veggies grown by children.
There were numerous arrangements of flowers. I liked the colourful glads best. The annual fair, always on Labour Day weekend, is well worth visiting.

ReplyDeleteI love the fruit and the flowers. But that quilt ... oh my. A good friend of mine in BC is a quilter, wins awards. The photo you shared here looks so much like the quilts created by my friend over here, different design, different colors, but the same detailed, so detailed, work. My gosh, thank you.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous gladioli. Do you know of their connection to the wonderful Australian character Dame Edna? She (he) used to throw them into the audience at her comedy shows. She was SO very funny. A friend of the Chef used to know the man behind Dame Edna very well. He would arrive to stay with vast amounts of luggage filled with Edna’s evening frocks, and a special case for her hats. One hat was made to look like the Sydney Opera House. I expect some of her work can be found online.

Timing the veggies to be at their peak for the fair is either luck or skill. I am not sure which.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you covered your fair. Perth Fair was this weekend. We are so intolerant of noise and people, we just remained at home.
ReplyDeleteYour photos of the Meaford Fall Fair reminded me so much of my hometown of Tavistock's Fall fair that I enjoyed as a young boy. I like the small town community spirit.
