Our January Thaw

We had a January thaw last week.  The temperature hit 9°C on Thursday, and a great deal of our snow disappeared!  It's back to winter now, quite abruptly, but the sequence of changes as we get a thaw always fascinates me.  It's impossible for me to get out and get many pictures in the winter, but I do have the view out our back window, so here goes.  Maybe it's seeing the same view every day that makes me aware of this.

If you remember. a week ago today the snow out back looked like this.

By Wednesday the temperature was rising and half our snowstick reappeared.

By Thursday morning the thaw was well underway.  The snow was simply collapsing down on itself and the bright sun was helping it along.

A leaf or two of the Hellebore appeared at the feet of our snowstick.  I wish that counted as an early sign of spring!

Patches of grass appeared on the golf course.

And a day later, a great deal of grass was showing.

But then 'poof!  It wasn't a lot of snow, but we woke up to everything looking white again, and it still does today.

  1. You went through a significant change that you tracked very well. Less so here.

  2. That seemed like a quick thaw, but being in the South I don't really have anything to compare it to. Take care and have a great week.

Do you ever feed that snowstick? 🤭

  5. That is a nice series of photographs showing what happened.
I know I've said it before but I do like your snow-stick :)

    All the best Jan

  6. I like your snow stick too, I wonder if he was alive if the name fitted so well. The changes show how fickle weather is, even down here, the mornings are darker already, but the days are hotter.

  7. So if you don't like the weather , wait a minute and it will change.

  8. That is so crazy! We had warm weather last week too, and now here we are in the deep freeze again.

  9. It was an early January thaw this year and I'm hoping we'll have a second thaw in a couple of weeks. I remember a January thaw sometime in the late nineties while living in the country near Fullarton when it got so warm one day that I fired up my motorcycle and took a spin down the country road we lived on. Not to smart.....my bike was a muddy mess by the time I got back, and so was I.

  10. It seems to me that the temperature swings lately go much further in each direction than I remember from the past. We have a lovely fall of snow, but the ice is still there underneath, and it makes one cautious walking about on previously cleared surfaces.

  12. We've had a terrible freeze/thaw. I prefer consistency.

  13. It's crazy how quickly the snow melts there. My daughter says they've warmed up too, but not much about freezing so the snow is sticking around.

  14. The snow melted and I'm sure you liked that. Walking through snow can be hard. I love the snow pictures though.

  15. We've had temps in the upper 50's (F) here in western WA, crazy stuff! The changes in temps sure affect birds and mammals (me too), not good.
