It's very late in the season to be seeing Monarch butterflies, but see one I did.  It was only a few feet away and totally absorbed in feeding on some Verbena blooms.  I was able to get several good pictures before it fluttered away!

This must surely be a late-hatching Monarch of this summer, ready to begin its migration southward.   Its wings were not in the least tattered.  What a privilege to see it up close!

  1. I have found one Verbena plant, so will wait and see if the Monarchs find it later in summer.

  3. That must have been quite a treat. Does it have enough time to get far enough south to survive? The temperature was 36 degrees here this morning, it must have been below freezing to the north.
