I cannot remember a spring when the snow disappeared so abruptly! Mind you, we still have snowbanks; it takes along time to melt those. But the foot or so of snow that was on our lawn ten days ago is gone - until today. It's snowing hard today!
One week ago today, the view out back looked like this. Our snowstick was just barely showing up.
And by the next morning a large well had melted out surrounding our winter indicator! All those big rabbit pellets are actually alfalfa pellets, which Mrs. F.G. spreads at this time of year for fertilizer.
By Sunday at noon, less than 48 hours after the melt started, the golf course looked like this.
And by Monday morning it was looking downright tropical!
Over at the edge of the garden two newer Hellebore were already in bloom when the snow cover melted!
The Rhododendron, which is a broad-leaved evergreen already has really obvious bright green buds.
So in four short days the snow virtually vanished leaving the view out back looking almost ready for golf!
There is a meme about the 11 seasons, and spring tends to use up a good majority of them.
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of snow to melt that quickly. The ground must be thawing and all that moisture will be appreciated when spring does arrive.
It's nice it's melting. Hopefully it warms up for you.

ReplyDeleteOur snow is gone except on the steepest north facing slopes, but it's supposed to snow a bit tonight -- it's March indeed.

DeleteIf any real live rabbits discover those alfalfa pellets you just might have real rabbit pellets ( namely poop) because they do like those. Hopefully the latest snow doesn't stay long.
ReplyDeleteWow, the HIGH here in western WA State today was 32 degrees F, that's really cold for us these past 3-4 years, way below the usual this time of year. But oh boy oh boy if warmer weather is coming we'll take it! Hellebore tell the tale! :-)

ReplyDeleteThese Spring melts sure are a big boost to morale and what a fine Spring tonic we have all been able to partake in. These last few snowy cold days have been a jolt but we know it is only a temporary short lived jolt now that we are in the middle of March. Looking ahead at the long range forecast I see a definate trend to warmer weather as temperatures finally begin their yearly rise.
