Amorous Squirrels

The only wildlife I see here are Eastern Grey Squirrels.  People have reported both White-tailed Deer and Red Fox out on the golf course, but I haven't seen any.  Thank goodness I have a variety of birds to watch for.

Virtually every day one or two Grey Squirrels spend time in the backyard, mostly gathering seed under our bird feeders.  In between feeding they race up and down around the tree trunks.

Most of them are Grey Squirrels, but we see a few of the black colour phases too.  They are the same species.

Just by chance one day I spotted these two squirrels, doing their best to ensure the continuation of the neighbourhood squirrel population.  The kits will be born in early spring.

  1. I once saw a trio of squirrels amorously engaged. I wondered about who did what to whom! :-)

  3. We were fascinated by the black squirrels on our visits to the northern US and Canada. Only see grey squirrel in this area. In Missouri near where we lives was a population of white squirrel. Neither of us can remember if they were albino or not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l4spmBCFpQ

  4. Love on a branch, that is precarious. Love those bushy tails, so glad to see your northern animals and birds.

  5. Fleece tops and rain jacket season has arrived - its almost too nice at 7 C to wear layers inland along Coastal BC but I have been digging out the gloves, mitts and toques and looking for the 'real' winter coats, just in case. We have squirrel visitors, raccoons in season, a great many moles and rats who burrow underground. Occasionally a deer or so wanders into the edge of town where we live and ONCE a bear managed to drag garbage contents from many houses up and down the street. Fish and Game came around and educated the neighbourhood on managing garbage when hibernation begins.

  7. We met a retired vet greeter at Graceland and when we told him we were from Ontario, Canada he exclaimed "Oh! You have all those black squirrels!" ha ha, we never heard that Canadian reference before.
At least you have some entertainment outside! :)

  9. Nice shot of the squirrels. They are fun to watch but not so much fun if they get up in the attic of your house!!! It's happened to us before.

  13. Squirrels are very clever... except for getting in the road! Then they have no sense.

  14. Squirrels are such rascally critters and I've sure had my time with them around the bird feeders over the years but now I feed the Squirrels as well. Figured if I couldn't beat em I might just as well feed em….

  15. When I was younger and lived in a small town near the Missouri River the town had all black squirrels. They don’t seem to migrate very far north but stay in the south corners of the state of Iowa.
