The Road Through the Woods

SLOWLY, the leaves are unfolding, but this is the latest spring I can remember.  It's as if spring has been on hold for 3 weeks, and now it's finally arriving.

We have a favourite road we drive down on our way to places further south; it goes through the woods for almost the entire concession.  These first three photos were taken May 2nd, when the leaves were still just yellow-green opening buds.

There was a bit of green showing, but certainly no leaves in the canopy.

These next five  photos were taken yesterday.  It's a LOT greener, and the Sugar Maple canopy is filling in fast.

There are no homes along this concession, so it's not plowed in the winter, and the trees are not cut back to make room for snow banks.  So we drive right through the woods at the edge of the road.

The canopy certainly isn't out entirely yet, but there's definitely a lot of green now.

Spring is slow, but it's finally coming along.

  2. Oh, I so would travel that road every chance I had...Lorelei (our granddaughter) used to call it going through the forest and she said it awed tones if we went under a canopy of trees.

  4. That's quite a difference. Spring may be late, but it's definitely come to your lovely part of the world. I'll be out in our own lovely forest today, where the greenery is incredibly lush. :-)

  5. These country roads are such fun to travel. And when the trees are out full, the canopy keeps the roads dry on many rainy days.......like today! Beautiful. I have a stretch of road here like that but not near as long under the trees and it is well used winter and summer.

  12. You're fortunate that officialdom (or is it officialdumb?) hasn't seen fit to "daylight" the road to make maintenance easier and promote melting of snow and ice.
